Ethics and Jurisprudence – A Practical Approach (morning)
The profession of dental hygiene has experienced amazing changes in recent years. It is important that we have a solid understanding of the ethics that guide the care that a dental hygienist delivers. Keeping up with the changes in legislation can seem like a daunting task and being able to turn the theory into practice is a skill in itself! The CDHA has recently released a new Code of Ethics for Dental Hygienist’s and this will be used to work through a variety of case scenarios to review and share our wisdom. De-mystifying the topic, locating resources and providing a practical tool for guidance will provide increased confidence in dealing with ethical issues.
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Identify the current ethics that guide the profession of Dental Hygiene.
- Describe what constitutes misconduct, negligence and malpractice.
- Discuss mandatory reporting requirements, professional boundary issues, self-initiation and sexual abuse prevention.
- Create a plan for solving a variety of case scenarios involving ethical dilemmas.
Professional Portfolio Workshop (afternoon)
Interactive lecture will begin with investigation of the Clinical Self-Assessment Package and an introduction to our new Standards of Practice that are effective January 2012. A discussion involving goal-setting and appropriate activities leads into a detailed review of the portfolio forms. Clarification of the process will provide insight and assistance for those who find creating and maintaining their professional portfolio, a challenge.
Hands-on activities will encompass an introduction to the Portfolio Manager (online) and cover a very thorough review and a step-by-step guide with each form. It is suggested that each attendee bring their own portfolio and a blank set of the CDHO Portfolio Forms work on.
This day will provide interactive discussion and networking that will positively impact your attitude as a professional, resulting in a productive change in your hygiene practice.
